Norcold N8DC & N10DC: Freezer Cold, Refrigerator Warm? It's Probably Not Your Thermistor.
Norcold N8DC & N10DC: Freezer Cold, Refrigerator Warm? It's Probably Not Your Thermistor.
One of the most common troubleshooting calls we receive for the Norcold N8DC and N10DC refrigerators starts the same way:
"My freezer is freezing everything solid, but the refrigerator section is warm."
The good news? This is a known issue.
The even better news? There's a good chance you're only one small part away from having cold beverages again.
The Symptom
If your:
-
Freezer is cooling normally
-
Refrigerator compartment is warm
-
Fans are operating
-
Unit appears to be running
There's a strong possibility that the problem is the Norcold 641592 Optical Control Board Kit.
We've seen this issue enough times that when a customer describes the symptoms, the 641592 is often the first thing that comes to mind.
Don't Skip This Step: Test Your Thermistor First
Before ordering any parts, take a few minutes to test the refrigerator thermistor.
A faulty thermistor can send incorrect temperature information to the refrigerator, causing cooling issues that can mimic a failed optical board.
If the thermistor tests within specification, it's time to move on to the next suspect.
And by suspect, we mean the one that's usually guilty.
The Real Culprit: Norcold 641592 Optical Board
The 641592 optical board controls communication and temperature monitoring functions within the refrigerator.
When it begins to fail, a common symptom is:
-
Freezer cools normally
-
Refrigerator section stops maintaining temperature
It's one of those frustrating failures that makes you question your sanity.
You open the freezer and find ice cream harder than a hockey puck.
You open the refrigerator and discover your milk has entered the early stages of becoming a science experiment.
Replacing the 641592 Is Surprisingly Easy
Thankfully, replacing the optical board is about as straightforward as RV repairs get.
You'll typically need:
-
A screwdriver
-
About 10-15 minutes
-
Slightly more patience than it takes to explain campground Wi-Fi problems
The board is located behind the front control panel and can be replaced without removing the refrigerator from the RV.
No special tools.
No refrigerant handling.
No sacrificing a weekend to the RV repair gods.
Why This Failure Happens
Electronic components simply don't enjoy life inside an RV.
They're exposed to:
-
Heat
-
Humidity
-
Vibration
-
Temperature swings
-
The occasional pothole large enough to register on geological surveys
Over time, components on the optical board can fail, leading to communication and cooling issues.
The Bottom Line
If your Norcold N8DC or N10DC has a freezer that's working properly but a refrigerator section that's warm:
-
Test the thermistor first.
-
If the thermistor checks out, replace the Norcold 641592 Optical Board Kit.
-
Enjoy having cold food again.
This has become one of the most common fixes we see for these models, and in many cases it's the solution that gets customers back up and running quickly.
Because refrigerators should keep food cold.
That's literally their entire job.
