Norcold N8DC or N10DC Cooling in Refrigerator But Freezer Is Warm? Here's the Most Common Fix
If your Norcold N8DC or N10DC refrigerator is keeping food cold in the fresh food compartment but the freezer section is struggling to stay frozen, you're probably being pointed toward replacing the thermistor.
In many cases, that's not actually the problem.
Over the past several years, we've seen this exact symptom repeatedly on the Norcold N8DC and N10DC compressor refrigerators. While a failed thermistor can certainly cause temperature issues, one particular component has proven to be a much more common culprit: the Norcold 641592 Optical Control Board.
Step 1: Test the Thermistors First
Before ordering any parts, start with the basics.
Both the refrigerator and freezer compartments use thermistors to report temperature information back to the control system. A thermistor that is out of specification can cause improper cooling performance.
Using a multimeter, test the thermistors and compare the resistance readings to Norcold specifications. If either thermistor fails the test, replace it.
If both thermistors test correctly, move on to the next step.
Step 2: Replace the Optical Board
When thermistors check out properly but the freezer remains warm while the refrigerator compartment cools normally, the optical control board is frequently the source of the problem.
The Norcold N8DC and N10DC use a front control panel assembly that contains the optical board. Norcold's current replacement assembly for later-production models is part number 641592.
We've seen numerous cases where replacing the optical board immediately restores proper freezer operation after thermistors have been ruled out.
Why This Happens
The optical board is responsible for processing temperature information and communicating operating commands throughout the refrigerator system. When the board begins to fail, it can misinterpret temperature inputs or improperly control cooling functions, leading to strange symptoms that often look like a thermistor issue.
The result?
-
Refrigerator section appears normal.
-
Freezer temperature slowly rises.
-
Ice cream becomes soup.
-
RV owners start questioning their sanity.
Which Optical Board Do I Need?
Norcold uses two different control panel assemblies depending on the refrigerator's serial number.
-
Serial numbers below SE079WDW00190 use control panel assembly 640338. (DISCONTINUED)
-
Serial numbers above SE079WDW00190 use control panel assembly 641592.
Always verify your model and serial number before ordering.
Final Thoughts
If your Norcold N8DC or N10DC refrigerator is cooling properly in the refrigerator compartment but the freezer is warm, don't automatically assume the thermistor is bad.
Test the thermistors first.
If they pass inspection, the next component we recommend replacing is the optical board. It's become one of the most common fixes we've seen for this exact symptom and can save you from replacing perfectly good parts while your freezer continues its transformation into a slightly cooler cupboard.
