Norcold AC/ DC model refrigerators run off a compressor and operate on either AC or DC mode. All Norcold compressors, however, run on DC voltage. This means that when you operate your refrigerator on AC, the AC power supply is inverting that current to DC voltage in order to run the compressor. These model refrigerators are typically installed in boats and trucks because they don't have the same ventilation requirements that gas absorption models have and are capable of running off-level.
