Why lithium batteries need the right charge controller

Correct charge voltages: LiFePO4 batteries need specific absorption and float settings. A lead-acid profile can undercharge them, and a poorly configured controller can overcharge them. A lithium profile gets it right.
No equalization: lead-acid equalize cycles can damage lithium cells. Lithium-ready controllers disable it.
Low-temperature protection: charging lithium below freezing can damage cells. Controllers such as the Renogy Rover Li include low-temperature charging protection.
MPPT efficiency: lithium batteries accept high charge current, and MPPT harvests up to 30% more energy than PWM. That means faster recharges and more usable power, especially in winter or when you're parked in partial shade.

Sizing tip

Divide total panel watts by battery voltage and add 25% (for example, 600 W ÷ 12 V = 50 A, so choose a 60 A controller). Keep your array's cold-weather open-circuit voltage below the controller's PV voltage rating.
