Norcold N7X/ N8X Solid Red Light Fault (how to fix!)

stays on

SOLID RED

Norcold N7X / N8X Solid Red Light

The red light stays on without flashing. 120V wasn’t available, so the fridge switched to propane, but it couldn’t light the burner (a gas lockout). Work through the electric side first, then the propane side.

Before you start

  • Reset it once. Turn the fridge OFF, then back ON. If it cools on 120V or lights on propane, it may have been a one-time hiccup.
  • Stay safe. If you smell propane, shut off the gas at the tank, don’t flip switches and get everyone out. Unplug 120V and disconnect 12V before touching wires.
  • You’ll need a multimeter and a ruler or gap gauge.

PART A · ELECTRIC

The fridge only falls back to propane when it can’t run on 120V. Start here.

STEP 1

Check the outlet

Plug a lamp or meter into the outlet the fridge uses, or measure it with a multimeter set to AC volts.

▼
?

Is it a working outlet with at least 85 volts AC?

NO
▼

Correct the AC outlet

Reset the breaker or GFCI, check shore power or the generator, and fix the outlet.

YES
▼
Next check ▼

STEP 2

Check the AC power cord

Look over the fridge’s power cord for cuts, burn marks or loose prongs, and make sure it’s plugged in fully.

▼
?

Is the AC power cord in good working condition?

YES
▼
Next check ▼

STEP 3

Check the 8A fuse

With the fridge unplugged, find the 8 amp fuse on the main control board (power board assembly) and check it with your meter.

▼
?

Is the 8A fuse intact?

NO
▼

Replace the fuse

Replace it with an 8 amp fuse of the same type. If it blows again, ask a tech.

YES
▼
Next check ▼

PART B · PROPANE

Electric checks out? Now find out why the propane didn’t light.

STEP 4

Check the propane supply

Make sure there’s propane in the tank and every valve between the tank and the fridge is open.

▼
?

Are all propane valves open and the supply free of air?

NO
▼

Open the valves and purge the air

After a tank swap or a long storage, air in the line can keep the burner from lighting. Light a stovetop burner for a minute to bleed the air, then reset the fridge.

YES
▼
Next check ▼

STEP 5

Check the burner

Look at the burner for rust flakes, soot, spider webs or debris.

▼
?

Is the burner clean?

NO
▼

Clean the burner

Clean off the rust, soot and debris, then reset the fridge.

YES
▼
Next check ▼

STEP 6

Check the electrode gap

Measure the gap between the spark electrode tip and the burner.

▼
?

Is the gap between 1/8” and 3/16”?

NO
▼

Correct the gap

Adjust the gap to 1/8”–3/16”, then reset the fridge.

YES
▼
Next check ▼

STEP 7

Check the spark/sense wire

Check that the spark/sense (igniter) wire is installed correctly at both ends, then check it for continuity.

▼
?

Is it installed correctly, with continuity?

NO
▼

Correct it, or replace the wire

Reconnect it. If it’s damaged or has no continuity, replace the spark/sense igniter wire. Ask us for the right one.

YES
▼
Next check ▼

STEP 8

Test the gas valve coil

With the fridge unplugged, disconnect the gas valve wires and measure the solenoid coil with your meter on ohms.

▼
?

Does the coil read 74–92 ohms?

NO
▼

Replace the gas train

A coil outside 74–92 ohms has failed. Norcold’s fix is the complete gas train assembly.

YES
▼

STEP 9

Check the gas valve wires

Check that the wires from the power board to the gas valve are connected, then check each one for continuity.

▼
?

Are they connected, with continuity?

NO
▼

Correct it, or replace the wires

Reconnect them, and replace any wire without continuity.

YES
▼
Next check ▼

STEP 10

Check for 12V at the gas valve

Turn the fridge ON in LP mode and measure DC volts at the gas valve wires while it tries to light.

▼
?

Does the power board send 12V DC to the gas train?

NO
▼

Replace the power board

The board isn’t powering the gas valve. Replace the main control board (power board assembly).

YES
▼

Replace the gas train

The board is doing its job and the gas valve still won’t open. Replace the gas train assembly.

Seeing a flashing code instead? 1 flash: AC heater fault · 2 flashes: internal control fault · 3 flashes: limit circuit fault · 4 flashes: AC heater relay fault · 5 flashes: flame sensed fault · 8 flashes: DC voltage low · 9 flashes: DC voltage high · 10 flashes: communication fault. Still stuck? Ask a tech with your model, serial number and how far you got in the checklist. We’ll confirm the part before you order.
