Dometic Americana Not Cooling on AC (Cools Fine on Gas)

The fridge gets cold on propane but runs warm on shore power. Since gas mode cools properly, the cooling unit is doing its job. The problem is less heat on AC: low voltage, a weak or wrong heating element, or the lower board.

Different model? These steps are for the models above, from Dometic’s service manual for them. For any other Dometic fridge, ask a tech before you test or order parts.

Before you start

  • Safety first. These are live 120V tests and can shock you. Dometic says they should be done by a qualified service technician.
  • Where things are. The power cord outlet, lower circuit board and AC heater leads are behind the lower outside vent, under the protective cover.
  • Why voltage matters. The heater is sized for 120 volts. As the voltage drops, so does the heat, and the fridge cools less. Below 100 volts the drop is noticeable.
  • You’ll need a multimeter set to AC volts and ohms, and a clamp-on amp meter.

PART A · AC VOLTAGE

Is the heater getting full voltage?

STEP 1

Make sure it’s really on AC

The AUTO lamp should be on with the fridge plugged in, so it runs on AC. An absorption fridge takes hours to settle after a change, so run it on AC for a full day before you judge it.

▼
?

Is it in AUTO mode, plugged in, and still warm after a day?

NO
▼

Give it time on AC

Switch to AUTO, plug in, and check the temperature again after 24 hours.

YES
▼
Go to Step 2 ▼

STEP 2

Measure voltage under load

With the fridge running on AC, measure AC volts at the outlet it plugs into, behind the lower vent. Check it again with the RV’s air conditioner or other big loads running.

▼
?

Does it stay between 100 and 132 volts?

NO
▼

Fix the low voltage

Low voltage means less heat and less cooling. Look for a weak campground pedestal or generator, a long or undersized extension cord, or a loose connection in the RV’s wiring. Don’t run the fridge on an extension cord inside the RV; it should plug straight into a grounded outlet.

PART B · AC HEATING ELEMENT

Voltage is good. Is the heater putting out the right heat?

STEP 3

Test the heating element

Unplug the fridge. Remove the heater leads from the lower board and measure ohms across them, with the heater at room temperature. It should match your model within ±10%:

Model Watts Ohms Amps
RM2351, RM2354, RM2451, RM2454, RM2551, RM2554 175 80 1.5
RM2652, RM2662, RM2663, RM2852, RM2862 325 44 2.7
▼
?

Is the reading in range?

NO
▼

Replace the AC heating element

A heater that reads out of range doesn’t put out the heat the cooling unit needs. It may also be the wrong wattage from an earlier repair. Never use a bigger or smaller heater than your model calls for. For the 325W models, see the AC Heater 3313107.039 (325W). For the 175W models, ask a tech with your product number.

Go to Step 4 ▼

STEP 4

Check the current draw

Reconnect the heater and run the fridge on AC with the thermistor unplugged from P2, so the board keeps the heater on. Clamp an amp meter around one heater lead. It should draw about 1.5 amps (175W) or 2.7 amps (325W), steadily.

▼
?

Is it drawing full current the whole time?

NO
▼
Go to Step 5 ▼
YES
▼

The AC system is working

The heater gets full voltage and puts out the right heat. Plug the thermistor back in. Make sure the heater is fully seated in its pocket on the boiler. If it’s still weak on AC but good on gas, ask a tech with your readings.

PART C · LOWER CIRCUIT BOARD

The heater is good, but it isn’t getting steady power.

STEP 5

Compare voltage in and out of the board

With the thermistor still unplugged and the fridge on AC, measure AC volts at J5 and J6 (power in), then at J7 and J8 (power out to the heater).

▼
?

Is J7 to J8 the same as J5 to J6, and steady?

NO
▼

Replace the lower circuit board

Power going out to the heater is lower than what comes in, or it cuts in and out. The board’s AC circuit is failing. Replace the lower board. Match the part number on your old board’s label.

Check the heater connections

The board passes full voltage. Look for loose, burnt or corroded terminals on the heater leads and at J7 and J8. A bad connection there can drop the current. Repair it and test again.
