Dometic Americana & Americana Plus Troubleshooting Guide: CHECK Light, Not Cooling & More

Dometic Americana & Americana Plus Troubleshooting Guide

Unlike Norcold, the Americana doesn’t show error codes. It has one warning, the CHECK light, and everything else shows up as a symptom: no lights, no cooling, no gas, freezing, frost. Dometic’s service manual lists 12 symptoms, plus a section on the ice maker. Find yours below and open its step-by-step flowchart.

Jump to your problem

1. Reading the control panel

AUTO lamp

On means AUTO mode: the fridge picks AC when you’re plugged in and switches to propane when you’re not. Off means GAS mode, propane only. On 3-way models, DC mode overrides both and is for holding temperature while driving.

CHECK lamp

Gas only. The board tries to light the burner for about 45 seconds, waits 2 minutes, and tries again, three times in all. If all three fail, CHECK comes on. To reset, turn the power button OFF, wait a few seconds, then ON. CHECK light guide →

Temperature control

The RM2351, RM2451, RM2551, RM2652 and RM2852 use a factory-set temperature. The RM2354, RM2454, RM2554, RM2662, RM2663 and RM2862 have a temperature button with lights.

Limp mode

If the board can’t read the thermistor, it runs the cooling unit nonstop to keep food cold. It stays that way until the thermistor is fixed, and it can freeze food. Freezing guide →

3. Quick reference: test values

The numbers from Dometic’s service manual, all in one place.

12V DC supply 9.6 to 22 volts DC at the terminal block (shuts down above 22)
AC ripple on the 12V line 6 volts AC or less
AC voltage 100 to 132 volts AC
AC heater RM2351–RM2554: 175W, 80 Ω, 1.5 A · RM2652–RM2862: 325W, 44 Ω, 2.7 A (±10%)
Thermistor 8,000 to 10,000 Ω in ice water (33–35°F)
Gas pressure 11 in. water column at the test port (never over 12)
Gas solenoid coil About 49 Ω (±10%)
Thermocouple 22 to 36 mV within 45 seconds; 25 to 35 mV running
Electrode spark gap 3/16 inch, tip above the burner slots
Burner jet RM2351/2354: #39 · RM2451–2554: #43 · RM2652–2862: #58
Fuses 3A DC (control) · 5A AC (AC circuit) · 30 or 35A DC (DC heater, 3-way only)
Cooling unit test 1 gallon of water at 43°F or colder after 12 hours with the thermistor unplugged
Climate control heater About 24 Ω (±10%)

Before you call it the cooling unit

Most “bad cooling unit” calls turn out to be leveling, venting, door seals or a dirty flue. If it cools on one power source but not the other, the cooling unit is fine; the problem is the heat source. Run Dometic’s 12-hour water test in the not cooling guide before you replace anything.
