Dometic Americana Frost Building Up Too Fast: Troubleshooting Flowchart
FAST FROST BUILDUP
Dometic Americana Frost Building Up Too Fast
Frost comes from moisture in the air freezing onto the cold fins and freezer walls. If it builds up fast, extra moist air is getting in: from uncovered food, the door, a door seal or the liner seal, or very humid weather. Defrosting every 7 to 21 days is normal, depending on humidity.

Different model? These steps are for the models above, from Dometic’s service manual for them. For any other Dometic fridge, ask a tech before you test or order parts.
Before you start
- What’s normal. Dometic says defrosting every 7 to 21 days is normal. Faster than that means extra moisture is getting in.
- Why it matters. Thick frost insulates the fins, so the fridge cools less. The same air leaks that cause frost also cause poor cooling.
- You’ll need a dollar bill, a hair dryer, clear silicone, and foil-backed tape for the last step.
PART A · HOW IT’S USED
The simple causes first.
STEP 1
Check how food is stored
Cover liquids and moist foods, never put hot food in, and keep the shelves free of paper and large containers. Keep the doors open as briefly as you can. A very heavy load also takes longer to cool and can cause frost.
Are liquids uncovered, hot food going in, or the doors opened a lot?
Change the habits
Cover everything moist, let food cool first, and limit door openings. Defrost the fridge, then watch how fast the frost comes back.
STEP 2
Consider the humidity
Very humid weather puts more moisture in the air every time you open the door, especially if the RV isn’t air conditioned.
Is it very humid in the RV right now?
Reduce the humidity
Run the RV’s air conditioner or a dehumidifier, and vent moisture from cooking and showers. Frost will slow as the humidity drops.
PART B · AIR LEAKS
Moist air is getting in around the doors or behind the fridge.
STEP 3
Test the door seals
Close each door on a dollar bill and pull it out. Do this on all four sides in several places. You should feel resistance every time.
Did it slide out easily anywhere?
Fix the seal
Lift the inside of the gasket and put a 1/4-inch ball of fiberglass insulation in each corner of both doors, especially the top corners. Warm the gasket with a hair dryer (don’t melt it), close the door and let it cool. Recheck, and replace the gasket if it still won’t seal.
STEP 4
Check the door position
If a door closes too high or too low against the frame, cold air leaks out and warm, moist air leaks in.
Is either door out of position?
Adjust the door
Add or remove a thin flat washer on top of the lower or middle hinge pin, or loosen the hinge screws slightly, move the door into position and retighten.
STEP 5
Check the drain hose and cooling unit seal
The drain hose behind the fridge needs its check valve at the end. If the hose was shortened at install, the valve must be moved to the new end. The cooling unit’s foam block must sit flush with the back of the cabinet.
Is the check valve missing or the foam block not sealed?
Seal it
Put the check valve on the end of the drain hose, or remove and reinstall the cooling unit so the foam block seals.
PART C · LINER SEAL
Cold air is escaping where the liner meets the frame.
STEP 6
Reseal the liner to the frame
There’s a seal where the plastic interior liner meets the metal front frame. If it’s incomplete, cold air reaches the frame and frost forms fast. Fixing it takes two parts:
- Remove the screws holding the fridge in its cabinet and slide it out 2 to 4 inches. Clean the metal frame and the foil-backed insulation around the fridge. Apply foil-backed or aluminum tape over the joint between the frame and the insulation, all the way around with no gaps.
- Make sure the fridge is dry and its surfaces are above 50°F. Run a continuous bead of clear silicone along the seam between the plastic liner and the metal frame, around both the freezer and fresh food compartments.
Is the frost still building up fast?
Fixed
Defrost the fridge and keep an eye on it. Every 7 to 21 days is normal.
