WATER ON THE FRAME

Dometic Americana Water on the Frame Between the Doors

Water droplets form on the metal frame between the freezer and fresh food doors, and sometimes run down the front. In humid weather a little sweating is normal. A lot of it means the frame is too cold: the climate control heater is off or failed, or cold air is leaking through a door seal or the liner seal.

Before you start

  • What’s normal. High humidity can cause a small amount of condensation on the frame. It goes away as the humidity drops.
  • Climate control. Some models have a 12V heater in the frame between the doors, with a switch under the top trim panel by the controls. It keeps the frame warm enough that water doesn’t form.
  • You’ll need a multimeter set to ohms and continuity, and a dollar bill.

PART A · HUMIDITY & CLIMATE CONTROL

Is it just the weather, and is the frame heater on?

STEP 1

Consider the humidity

Is it hot and humid, and the RV not air conditioned? Moist air condenses on anything cold, including the frame.

▼
?

Is it very humid?

YES
▼

Reduce the humidity

Run the RV’s air conditioner or a dehumidifier. If your fridge has a climate control switch, turn it ON (Step 2). The sweating will drop with the humidity.

NO
▼
Go to Step 2 ▼

STEP 2

Turn on the climate control

Look under the top trim panel by the control panel for the climate control switch. Not every unit has one.

▼
?

Does your fridge have the switch, and is it OFF?

YES
▼

Turn it ON in humid weather

It draws a little 12V power the whole time it’s on, under half an amp, so turn it OFF when you’re not plugged in or charging, or the RV is in storage.

NO
▼
Go to Step 3 ▼

STEP 3

Test the climate control switch

With it ON and water still forming, turn the fridge off. Disconnect the wires from the switch and check it for continuity.

▼
?

Does it read no continuity OFF, and continuity ON?

NO
▼

Replace the switch

The switch has failed, so the heater never gets power. Replace it. ask a tech with your product number for the right part.

YES
▼
Go to Step 4 ▼

STEP 4

Test the climate control heater

With the switch OFF, find the side of the switch that has only two wires. Measure ohms from that wire to ground.

▼
?

Is it about 24 ohms (±10%)?

NO
▼

The heater has failed

An open or out-of-range reading means the frame heater isn’t working. Check its wiring and connections first. ask a tech about replacing it, since it’s built into the frame.

YES
▼
Go to Step 5 ▼

PART B · AIR LEAKS

The frame heater works. Is cold air leaking onto the frame?

STEP 5

Test the door seals

Close each door on a dollar bill and pull it out. Do this on all four sides in several places, especially along the frame between the doors.

▼
?

Did it slide out easily anywhere?

YES
▼

Fix the seal

Lift the inside of the gasket and put a 1/4-inch ball of fiberglass insulation in each corner of both doors, especially the top corners. Warm the gasket with a hair dryer (don’t melt it), close the door and let it cool. Recheck, and replace the gasket if it still won’t seal.

NO
▼
Go to Step 6 ▼

STEP 6

Check the door position

If a door closes too high or too low against the frame, cold air leaks onto it.

▼
?

Is either door out of position?

YES
▼

Adjust the door

Add or remove a thin flat washer on top of the lower or middle hinge pin, or loosen the hinge screws slightly, move the door into position and retighten.

NO
▼
Go to Step 7 ▼

PART C · LINER SEAL

Cold air is reaching the frame from inside the cabinet.

STEP 7

Reseal the liner to the frame

There’s a seal where the plastic interior liner meets the metal front frame. If it’s incomplete, cold air reaches the metal frame and moisture condenses on it. Fixing it takes two parts:

  • Remove the screws holding the fridge in its cabinet and slide it out 2 to 4 inches. Clean the metal frame and the foil-backed insulation around the fridge. Apply foil-backed or aluminum tape over the joint between the frame and the insulation, all the way around with no gaps.
  • Make sure the fridge is dry and its surfaces are above 50°F. Run a continuous bead of clear silicone along the seam between the plastic liner and the metal frame, around both the freezer and fresh food compartments.
▼
?

Is water still forming on the frame?

NO
▼

Fixed

Keep the climate control on in humid weather if you have it.

YES
