Dometic DM vs RM Model Refrigerators: What's the difference?!

Dometic DM vs. RM Refrigerators: What's the Difference?

If you've been shopping for a replacement refrigerator or searching for RV refrigerator parts, you've probably noticed that some Dometic models begin with DM, while others begin with RM.

Naturally, many RV owners assume these are completely different refrigerator designs.

The truth? Not really.

The Short Answer

The DM series is simply the newer naming convention for many of Dometic's absorption refrigerators. The older models were typically designated with the RM prefix.

Both are gas absorption refrigerators designed to operate on LP gas and 120-volt AC power, and many share the same overall design, dimensions, and replacement parts.

Why Did Dometic Change the Name?

Dometic gradually transitioned from the RM model designation to DM as the product line evolved.

This wasn't a complete redesign of the refrigerator—it was more of a product line update. Over the years, Dometic introduced improvements to electronics, control boards, cosmetic styling, and certifications while keeping much of the refrigerator platform the same.

For that reason, you'll often find replacement parts that fit both RM and DM models.

Examples

Some common examples include:

Older RM Model Newer DM Model
RM2652 DM2652
RM2662 DM2662
RM2852 DM2852
RM2862 DM2862

These refrigerators have very similar cabinet dimensions and cooling systems, making many replacement parts interchangeable.

Are the Parts the Same?

Many parts are interchangeable, but not all of them.

Depending on the production year, differences may exist in:

  • Control boards
  • Eyebrow boards (display panels)
  • Thermistors
  • Door shelves and bins
  • Interior shelving
  • Door assemblies

Always verify your refrigerator's complete model and product number before ordering replacement parts.

Does Dometic Treat Them as Different Refrigerators?

Not really.

In fact, Dometic's own installation manuals cover DM, RM, and even DMA refrigerators together. The installation requirements, ventilation specifications, and operating principles are essentially the same across these product families.

That's one of the clearest indicators that these models belong to the same overall refrigerator platform.

What About the Dometic Recall?

Some owners become confused after seeing Dometic's refrigerator recall information.

The recall applies to certain older RM and NDR models.

Dometic specifically notes that refrigerators beginning with DM or NDM are not included in that particular recall. This does not mean the refrigerators are fundamentally different—it simply reflects different production years and manufacturing changes.

Final Thoughts

If you're comparing a Dometic DM refrigerator to an RM refrigerator, don't think of them as two completely different product lines.

Instead, think of the DM series as the next generation of the RM family. They share the same absorption cooling technology, similar cabinet designs, and many interchangeable replacement parts, with updates made over the years to electronics, controls, and styling.
