Norcold Ice Maker Not Working? Troubleshooting for N15DC/N20DC and Absorption Models

Most “no ice” problems are power, water or the shut-off arm. Here’s how to check each, plus valve and ice maker tests from Norcold’s service manual.

Check these first

  • The ice maker needs 120V AC, even on the 12V N15DC/N20DC and even when an absorption fridge is running on propane. No shore power or inverter = no ice.
  • Water must be on, at 15–125 psi.
  • The shut-off arm must be down (ON) and moving freely.
  • The freezer must be cold (below 32°F). On the N7/N8, turn the freezer blower on for the most ice.

Norcold refrigerators with a factory ice maker. Norcold says an ice maker can’t be added to a fridge built without one.

How the ice maker works

When the freezer is cold enough, the ice maker opens its water valve, fills the mold, freezes the water, then warms the mold slightly and ejects the cubes into the bin. As the bin fills, the ice pushes the shut-off arm up, which turns the ice maker off. Use some ice and the arm drops and it starts again.

Absorption IM models work down to 0°F outside because a 12V heater keeps the water valve and fill line from freezing. The N15DCIM/N20DCIM have no heater and are rated to work only above 32°F.

Step-by-step: no ice

STEP 1

Check the shut-off arm

Push it down to ON. Make sure nothing frozen in the bin is holding it up and it moves freely. If it’s broken, replace it.

STEP 2

Check 120V to the ice maker

On most models the ice maker has its own cord (white on the 1200 and 1210). Make sure it’s plugged in and the outlet has power. On propane-only with no shore power, the ice maker won’t run.

STEP 3

Check the water supply

Open the RV’s water valve to the fridge and make sure the pump or city water is on (15–125 psi). In cold weather, check the supply line from the shut-off to the fridge’s water valve: Norcold notes its heater doesn’t protect that section.

▼

STEP 4

Check the freezer temperature

The ice maker won’t cycle unless the freezer is below freezing. Norcold’s N6/N8 manual says to set the fridge mid-range or colder. If the freezer is warm, fix that first.

NO WATER IN MOLD

Suspect the water valve

Check the valve’s inlet strainer for scale (Norcold says to check it yearly). On the 1200 series, Norcold tests the valve by jumping terminals V and L on the ice maker: the valve should click and buzz. Coil resistance at V–N should be 295–360 Ω. No click or out of range: replace the valve.

ICE IN MOLD, NOT EJECTING
▼

Suspect the ice maker

Norcold’s 1200 test: with water off and 120V on, jump terminals T and H for no more than 15 seconds. The ejector should start turning. If it doesn’t, check the mold heater (71–79 Ω across L and H) and the thermal fuse in the harness. A bad heater or motor means a new ice maker.

Other ice maker problems

Problem What Norcold says to check
Not much ice Fridge venting, control setting and AC voltage, a restricted water line, low water pressure. Expect about 3 lb (N6/N8) to 3.5 lb (1200) a day.
Small or hollow cubes Fill too low. On the 1200, each 1/4 turn of the fill screw changes the fill about 10 mL (normal fill is 140 mL). Never turn it more than one full turn. Also check water pressure.
Water dripping or the mold overflowing Pressure over 125 psi, a damaged valve seal or the fill screw set too high. A valve that overfills on its own needs replacing.
Milky or bad-tasting ice Don’t store food in the ice bin; hard water. After storage, throw out the first two batches.
Fill line freezes in cold weather (absorption models) The 12V line heater turns on around 38°F and off at 48°F. Check its 12V supply and thermostat. The 1200’s fill tube itself can’t be replaced.

FAQ

Why is my Norcold ice maker not making ice?

Check four things: the shut-off arm is down, the ice maker has 120V AC, the water is on (15–125 psi), and the freezer is below 32°F. Then check the water valve.

Does the Norcold ice maker work on propane?

The fridge cools on propane, but the ice maker itself needs 120V AC, so it needs shore power or an inverter.

Does the N15DCIM ice maker work on 12V?

No. The N15DC/N20DC fridge runs on 12V, but Norcold says its ice maker needs 120V AC.

How do I test a Norcold ice maker water valve?

On the 1200 series, Norcold jumps terminals V and L: the valve should click and buzz. Coil resistance at V–N should be 295–360 ohms.
