Norcold N15DC and N20DC Troubleshooting Guide: Error Codes E1–E9 and Fixes

Every code the N15DC and N20DC can show, what it means, and the step-by-step flowchart to fix it.

Norcold’s 12V DC compressor refrigerators (14.9 and 18.6 cu ft). These run on 12 volts only: no propane, no 120V heater.

What you’ll see

ON/OFFMODENORCOLDN15DC / N20DC

Codes blink in the MODE display, where the temperature setting (1 to 5) normally shows. The blue light above the ON/OFF button glows solid when the fridge is running normally.

Blue ON light blinking instead?

Some N15DC and N20DC units signal a problem by blinking the blue ON light rather than showing an E-code.

  • Fast blink a break in the thermistor connection. Check the sensor plug and wiring.
  • Slow blink input voltage too low, or AC ripple on the 12V line. Check the battery, wiring and converter.

Good to know

  • Voltage: starts at 10.9 V, shuts off at 10.4 V, restarts at 11.7 V.
  • Blue light off and won’t run? check the two fuses under the fridge (freezer and fresh food). Open the fuse cap and remove the fuse with needle-nose pliers.
  • Overheat protection: the power module shuts off above 212°F and restarts below 176°F. Keep the area behind the fridge clear and the vents open.
  • Restart delay: after the fridge is turned off, the compressor waits 5 minutes before it starts again.
  • Limits: run it within 10° of level. Cooling suffers above 110°F, and running above 140°F can permanently damage the compressor.
  • Not cooling, no code? check that the vents aren’t blocked, the doors seal, food isn’t blocking airflow, no hot food went in, and the freezer is defrosted.
