Norcold N15DC and N20DC Error Code E5: Voltage Too Low
There isn’t enough 12V voltage at the fridge to start the compressor. It needs 10.9 V to start.
Before you start
- You’ll need a multimeter set to DC volts.
- Know the numbers starts at 10.9 V, shuts off at 10.4 V, restarts at 11.7 V.
Fits these models
Norcold’s 12V DC compressor refrigerators (14.9 and 18.6 cu ft). These run on 12 volts only: no propane, no 120V heater.
What you’ll see
E5 blinking in the MODE display. It means the voltage reaching the fridge is too low for it to run.
STEP 1
Charge the battery
Charge the house battery fully, from shore power, the generator or solar, and check that the converter or charger is actually charging.
Does the fridge start once the battery is charged?
It was the battery
Watch your battery level. If it drains quickly, have the battery load-tested.
STEP 2
Measure voltage at the fridge
Measure DC volts at the fridge’s 12V input while it tries to start, and compare it with the battery voltage.
Much lower at the fridge than at the battery?
Find the voltage drop
Check every connection, fuse and switch in the 12V line. Norcold says connections must be clean, tight and free of corrosion. Fix any loose, corroded or undersized wiring.
STEP 3
Check the battery setup
Norcold recommends a dual-battery setup, with one battery for the engine and one only for the DC appliances. Other 12V loads on a weak battery can pull the voltage below 10.9 V when the compressor tries to start.
Battery and wiring good, still E5?
Upgrade the battery
A larger or healthier battery bank, or a separate battery for appliances, usually solves repeat E5 codes.
Suspect the power module
With good voltage at the fridge, the compressor power module may be at fault. Ask a tech to confirm which module fits your serial number.
Parts for this repair
For the N20DC, Norcold lists power module 640178 for serial numbers ending 086 and below, and 641548 for 087 and above.
Still stuck? ask a tech with your model, serial number and the code or readings you got. We’ll confirm the part before you order.
Covers Norcold N15DC, N15DCSS, N15DCIMSS, N20DC and N20DCSS (12V DC compressor), fault code E5. Code meanings from the Norcold N15DC Series owner’s manual.
