Norcold N15DC and N20DC Error Code E2: Freezer Thermistor

CODE E2

Norcold N15DC and N20DC Error Code E2: Freezer Thermistor

The freezer temperature sensor isn’t reading properly. Usually it’s a loose plug, damaged wiring or a bad thermistor.

Before you start

  • You’ll need a flashlight and a screwdriver to remove the sensor cover.
  • Before unplugging anything turn the fridge off at the ON/OFF button and disconnect its 12V supply (or pull the two fuses under the fridge).

Fits these models

N15DCN15DCSSN15DCIMSSN20DCN20DCSS

Norcold’s 12V DC compressor refrigerators (14.9 and 18.6 cu ft). These run on 12 volts only: no propane, no 120V heater.

What you’ll see

ON/OFFMODENORCOLDN15DC / N20DC

E2 blinking in the MODE display where the temperature setting (1 to 5) normally shows. It means the freezer thermistor (temperature sensor) isn’t reading properly.

STEP 1

Restart the fridge

Touch and hold the ON/OFF button for 5 seconds to turn it off, then turn it back on. After it’s been off, the compressor waits 5 minutes before it starts again, so give it time before you judge.

Is the code still there?

Watch it for a day

It was likely a one-time glitch. If the code comes back, continue with Step 2.

STEP 2

Check the sensor connection

Turn the fridge off and disconnect 12V. Find the freezer thermistor inside the freezer compartment and check that its plug is pushed fully into the wiring harness.

?

Is it connected properly?

NO
▼

Plug it in

Reconnect it firmly, power the fridge back on and check the code. If it’s still there, go to Step 3.

STEP 3

Inspect the wiring

Follow the sensor wire as far as you can. Look for pinched, cut, chafed or corroded wires and a loose connector.

▼
?

Any damage?

YES
▼

Repair the wiring

Fix the damage, then check the code. If it’s still there, replace the thermistor.

NO

Replace the thermistor

The plug and wiring are good, so the sensor itself is the likely cause. Norcold’s parts list shows thermistor 640149 (with cover) for these models. See the N15DC or N20DC parts.

Code still there after a new thermistor?

The control board may not be reading the sensor. Before buying a board, ask a tech to confirm.

Parts for this repair

If the code stays after the thermistor and wiring check out, the main control board is the next suspect.
