Norcold N15DC and N20DC Error Code E3: Low or High Voltage Cut-Out
The 12V supply at the fridge went outside its operating range, so the fridge shut itself off to protect the compressor.
Before you start
- You’ll need a multimeter set to DC volts.
- Know the numbers the fridge needs 10.9 V to start, shuts off at 10.4 V and restarts at 11.7 V.
Fits these models
Norcold’s 12V DC compressor refrigerators (14.9 and 18.6 cu ft). These run on 12 volts only: no propane, no 120V heater.
What you’ll see
E3 blinking in the MODE display. It means the voltage at the fridge dropped below, or rose above, the range it can run on.
STEP 1
Measure voltage at the fridge
With the fridge running (or trying to start), measure DC volts at the 12V input to the fridge, not at the battery. Low voltage at the fridge but good voltage at the battery means you’re losing voltage in the wiring.
Is it 11.7 V or higher at the fridge?
Charge and check the battery
Charge the house battery and make sure the converter or charger is working. Then go to Step 2 to look for voltage drop.
STEP 2
Check for voltage drop
Norcold says wire connections must be clean, tight and free of corrosion, because poor connections cause voltage drop. Check every connection, fuse and switch between the battery and the fridge, and compare the voltage at the battery with the voltage at the fridge while it runs.
Big difference between battery and fridge?
Fix the wiring
Clean and tighten connections and replace any corroded terminals or undersized wire, then check the code again.
STEP 3
Check for high voltage and charging spikes
E3 also covers high voltage. Check what the converter, solar controller or battery charger puts out while charging. Norcold says to disconnect the fridge’s positive (+) 12V wire before fast-charging the battery to avoid damaging it.
Voltage steady and in range, but E3 keeps coming back?
Fix the charging source
Have the converter or charger checked if voltage swings high or low while it charges.
Suspect the power module or control board
With good, steady voltage at the fridge, the compressor power module or main control board may be misreading it. Ask a tech before buying either.
