Norcold N4000 Error Code 8 (AC Heater Failure)

CODE 8

Norcold N4000 Error Code 8 (AC Heater Failure)

The AC heater is drawing far less current than it should (75% below normal), so the fridge won’t cool on 120V. Check the supply, the heater, its fuse, then the board.

Before you start

  • Where things are. The power board, fuses, burner and heaters are behind the lower outside vent on the back of the fridge. The control panel is on the front, at the top.
  • Good AC voltage is 108 to 132 volts AC.
  • Turn the fridge off before measuring the heater’s resistance.
  • Safety first. These are live 120V tests.

N4104N4141N4150

The Norcold N4000 series, built by Thetford. 3-way (12V DC, 120V AC and propane).

How to read this code

LED panel: press the ‹, □ and › buttons together until the temperature bars change. The lit bars spell the code in binary. This pattern is code 8.

LCD panel: the code number shows next to the wrench symbol.

No 12 volts, no code: the controls need 12V DC to show any error. With 12V, the blue power light is on.

STEP 1

Measure the AC supply

Measure AC volts at the fridge’s power board.

▼
?

Is it 108 to 132 volts?

NO
▼

Fix the AC supply

The issue isn’t the fridge. Check the outlet, breaker, GFCI and shore power.

YES
▼
Go to Step 2 ▼

STEP 2

Check the heater current

Put the fridge on AC and turn it off and on. You can measure current for the first 30 seconds. Clamp an amp meter on a heater lead.

▼
?

Is the heater drawing current?

YES
▼
Go to Step 3 ▼
NO
▼

Replace the AC heater

The heater isn’t drawing current. See the N4150, N4141 or N4104 parts.

STEP 3

Measure the heater

Turn the fridge off. Measure the AC heater’s resistance and compare it to the rating on the heater label.

▼
?

Is it in range?

NO
▼

Replace the AC heater

The heater is out of range.

YES
▼
Go to Step 4 ▼

STEP 4

Check the AC fuse

Check the AC fuse on the power board.

▼
?

Is it good?

NO
▼

Replace the fuse

Use the same rating as the original.

YES
▼

Replace the power board

Replace the power board. Match the part number on your old board; see the N4150, N4141 or N4104 parts or ask a tech.
