Norcold N4000 Error Code 4 (DC Heater Not Working)
CODE 4
Norcold N4000 Error Code 4 (DC Heater Not Working)
The 12V DC heater is off when it should be on, so the fridge won’t cool on 12V. Check the connections, the fuse, the heater’s current and resistance, then the board.
Before you start
- Where things are. The power board, fuses, burner and heaters are behind the lower outside vent on the back of the fridge. The control panel is on the front, at the top.
- Turn the fridge off before you measure the heater’s resistance.
- You’ll need a multimeter and a clamp-on DC amp meter.
Fits these models
The Norcold N4000 series, built by Thetford. 3-way (12V DC, 120V AC and propane).
How to read this code
LED panel: press the ‹, □ and › buttons together until the temperature bars change. The lit bars spell the code in binary. This pattern is code 4.
LCD panel: the code number shows next to the wrench symbol.
No 12 volts, no code: the controls need 12V DC to show any error. With 12V, the blue power light is on.
STEP 1
Check the connections
Check the DC heater and 12V high-current connections at the power board.
Are they all OK?
Restore the connections
Repair and tighten them, then test again.
STEP 2
Check the 12V fuse
Check the high-current 12V fuse on the power board.
Is it good?
Replace the fuse
Use the same rating as the original.
STEP 3
Check the heater current
Run the fridge in DC mode and clamp an amp meter on a heater lead.
Is it drawing about 17 A (N4141, N4150) or about 12 A (N4104)?
Replace the power board
The heater is drawing current, so the board isn’t reading it correctly. Replace the power board. Match the part number on your old board; see the N4150, N4141 or N4104 parts or ask a tech.
STEP 4
Measure the heater
Turn the fridge off. Measure the DC heater’s resistance:
| Model | DC heater |
|---|---|
| N4104 | 0.98–1.08 Ω |
| N4141, N4150 | 0.67–0.74 Ω |
Is it in range?
Replace the power board
Replace the power board. Match the part number on your old board; see the N4150, N4141 or N4104 parts or ask a tech.
Still stuck? ask a tech with your model, serial number and the code you’re seeing. We’ll confirm the part before you order.
Covers the Norcold N4104, N4141 and N4150. Based on Thetford’s N4000 troubleshooting guide (Error code 4), with North American voltage and gas pressure values.
