Norcold N4000 Not Cooling Well (No Error Code)
No error code, but the fridge isn’t cold enough on one energy source. Test it in that source’s manual mode, then follow the section for 12V, 120V or gas.
Before you start
- Where things are. The power board, fuses, burner and heaters are behind the lower outside vent on the back of the fridge. The control panel is on the front, at the top.
- Test in manual mode for the source that’s weak.
- Thermistor position. It must be on the 5th fin from the right inside the fridge. On every source, check this first.
Fits these models
The Norcold N4000 series, built by Thetford. 3-way (12V DC, 120V AC and propane).
PART A · WEAK ON 12V DC
Run it in manual DC mode.
STEP 1
Check the thermistor
Make sure the thermistor is on the 5th fin from the right.
Is it in the right place?
Move it
Install it on the 5th fin from the right.
STEP 2
Measure the 12V input
With the DC heater on, measure volts at the power board’s DC high-current (HC) input.
Is it above 12 volts?
Fix the DC supply
Voltage is dropping before it reaches the fridge. Check wire size, connections and the battery.
STEP 3
Measure at the heater
Measure volts at the DC heater connection on the power board.
Is it above 12 volts?
Replace the power board
Replace the power board. Match the part number on your old board; see the N4150, N4141 or N4104 parts or ask a tech.
STEP 4
Check the heater
Check that the DC heater is fully seated, and its resistance is right:
| Model | DC heater |
|---|---|
| N4104 | 0.98–1.08 Ω |
| N4141, N4150 | 0.67–0.74 Ω |
Is it installed and in range?
Fix or replace the DC heater
Reinstall it properly, or replace it if it’s out of range.
Ask a tech
ask a tech with your readings.
PART B · WEAK ON 120V AC
Run it in manual AC mode.
STEP 5
Check the thermistor
Make sure the thermistor is on the 5th fin from the right.
Is it in the right place?
Move it
Install it on the 5th fin from the right.
STEP 6
Measure AC at the board
With the heater on, measure AC volts between L and N at the power board.
Is it at least 108 volts?
Fix the AC supply
Low AC means less heat. Check the source and connections.
STEP 7
Measure at the heater
Measure AC volts at the heater connection on the power board.
Is it the same as the supply?
Replace the power board
Replace the power board. Match the part number on your old board; see the N4150, N4141 or N4104 parts or ask a tech.
STEP 8
Check the heater
Check the AC heater’s resistance against its label, and that it’s fully seated.
Is it in range and installed properly?
Fix or replace the AC heater
Reinstall it properly, or replace it if it’s out of range.
Ask a tech
ask a tech with your readings.
PART C · WEAK ON PROPANE
Run it in manual gas mode.
STEP 9
Check the burner and pressure
Check that the burner injector is clean, the flame is dense and blue, and gas pressure is 10.5 to 11.5 inches water column.
Are they all good?
Clean the burner and check pressure
Clean the burner, or replace it if combustion is poor. Then check the gas pressure.
STEP 10
Check the thermistor
Make sure the thermistor is on the 5th fin from the right.
Is it in the right place?
Move it
Install it on the 5th fin from the right.
STEP 11
Check the flame diffuser
Look in the flue pipe for the flame diffuser (baffle).
Is it in the pipe?
Install a flame diffuser
Without it, heat goes straight up the flue.
STEP 12
Check the burner alignment
Check that the burner is lined up under the flue pipe.
Is it aligned?
Align the burner
Center it under the pipe.
Ask a tech
ask a tech with your readings.
Still stuck? ask a tech with your model, serial number and the code you’re seeing. We’ll confirm the part before you order.
Covers the Norcold N4104, N4141 and N4150. Based on Thetford’s N4000 troubleshooting guide (inadequate performance with no error code), with North American voltage and gas pressure values.
