Repair or Replace Your RV Fridge? What It Costs to Fix vs. a New Absorption, 12V or Residential Refrigerator
Most RV fridge failures are a $40–$300 part. The big decision only comes when the cooling unit goes. Here’s how the numbers stack up.
The short version
- Boards, thermistors, heating elements and igniters are cheap fixes. Always rule them out before deciding the fridge is dead.
- A failed cooling unit (the sealed system on the back) is the real fork in the road: about $1,000–$1,300 for the part, plus labor to pull the fridge.
- A new absorption fridge keeps propane boondocking. A 12V compressor fridge cools better and uses no propane, but needs battery and solar. A residential fridge is cheapest to buy but the most work to install.
- Check for a recall first. Some Norcold 1200/1210 units qualify for a free fix.
What common repairs cost in parts
| Repair | Typical part price on our store | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Thermistor (temperature sensor) | $13–$111, most about $40 | Common cause of freezing or warm food. Easy swap. |
| AC heating element | $45–$361, most about $98 | Cools on gas but not electric? Test this first. |
| Igniter / electrode | $7–$155, most about $60 | Clicks but won’t light on propane. |
| Control or power board | $9–$767, most about $167 | Dinosaur boards are a common upgrade for older Norcold and Dometic units. |
| Cooling fan | $13–$65 for most | Weak cooling in hot weather. |
| Cooling unit | $535–$2,290, most Norcold and Dometic units $1,000–$1,300 | The sealed system. Can’t be recharged or repaired. |

Labor is the wild card. Mobile RV techs commonly charge about $100–$175 an hour plus a trip or service fee, according to owner reports. A board or thermistor swap is short work. A cooling unit swap means pulling the fridge out of the wall, and owners report shop totals of roughly $1,800–$2,500 for the whole job. Get a written quote.
When the cooling unit fails: your four options
| Option | Rough cost | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Replace the cooling unit | About $1,000–$1,300 part + labor | A fridge with a good cabinet, doors and controls | Removal and install time. Use a known brand (Nordic, OEM). |
| New absorption fridge | About $1,750–$2,140 for current Dometic DM models on our store | Propane boondocking with little solar | Match the cutout and vent sizes. |
| 12V compressor fridge | About $1,550–$2,050 for 8–10 cu ft (Norcold N8DC/N10DC, Furrion Arctic 10) | Hot climates, solar setups, no propane | Battery and solar capacity. Wire gauge to the battery. |
| Residential fridge + inverter | Fridge itself is often a few hundred dollars | Coaches with big battery banks and a large inverter | Cabinet changes, securing it for travel, a 2,000 W-class inverter and large battery bank. |
Fridge prices are current examples from our store (October 2026). Residential figures are owner-reported.
How the options compare
- Propane-only camping: only an absorption fridge runs for days on a propane tank. See how long a 20 lb tank lasts in our propane guide.
- Hot weather: compressor fridges hold temperature far better in high heat than absorption units, which struggle above about 90–100°F.
- Power use: the Norcold N10DC is rated at 8.3 A running (6.2 A in night mode). An independent test of the Dometic DMC4101 ran it about 20–25 hours on a 100 Ah lithium battery in 95°F heat. A residential fridge on an inverter can use roughly 90–200 Ah a day depending on size.
- Fit: the Norcold N10DC is built to fit an 8 cu ft absorption cutout and the N8DC a 6 cu ft cutout. Dometic says the DMC4101 fits an existing 8 cu ft cutout. Measure yours before ordering.
- Age: absorption fridges commonly last 10–15 years. If yours is near that age with worn doors and a cracked cabinet, putting a new cooling unit in it is harder to justify.
A simple way to decide
STEP 1
Confirm what actually failed
Rule out the cheap parts: fuse, thermistor, heating element, igniter, board. Our troubleshooting guides walk through each one.
STEP 2
Check for a recall
Look up your model and serial number. Norcold recall 10E049000 covers 1200/1201/1210/1211 units built from 2003 to October 2010.
STEP 3
If it’s the cooling unit, compare quotes
Price a replacement cooling unit installed vs a new fridge installed. If the rest of the fridge is in good shape, the cooling unit is usually the cheaper path.
Do you camp off-grid on propane, or mostly with shore power and solar?
Stay absorption
Replace the cooling unit, or buy a new propane/electric fridge that fits your cutout.
Consider a 12V compressor fridge
Budget for battery and solar. Our solar calculator helps you size it.

FAQ
Is it worth replacing an RV fridge cooling unit?
Often, if the rest of the fridge is in good shape. The part is about $1,000–$1,300 on our store, and owners report installed totals around $1,800–$2,500. A new absorption fridge plus installation usually costs more.
How much does it cost to replace an RV refrigerator?
A new propane/electric unit on our store currently runs about $1,750–$2,140 for Dometic DM models, and 8–10 cu ft 12V fridges about $1,550–$2,050, before installation.
Can I put a 12V fridge in my absorption fridge’s opening?
Several are designed for it: Norcold says the N10DC fits an 8 cu ft cutout and the N8DC a 6 cu ft cutout, and Dometic says the DMC4101 fits an 8 cu ft cutout. Check your vent openings and 12V wiring too.
How long do RV refrigerators last?
Absorption fridges commonly last 10–15 years with good care. Cleaning the burner and keeping the fridge level and well vented helps.
Still stuck? Ask a tech with your model, serial number and what you’ve found. We’ll confirm the part before you order.
