RV Fridge Door Won’t Stay Closed or Opens While Driving: Latches, Hinges and Travel Locks
A fridge door that swings open on the road means spilled food and a fridge that can’t keep cold. It’s usually the latch, a loose hinge or the fridge being out of level.
The short version
- Most RV fridges rely on a latch that clicks shut. Norcold’s Polar manual says to push the door until it clicks to lock it for travel.
- Many fridges also have a storage or vent position that holds the door slightly open. Never use it while driving.
- Loose hinge screws and sagging doors are the top cause owners report. The door drops below the latch and won’t catch.
- A bad door seal can push the door back open. Test it with a dollar bill.

Step-by-step: why won’t my fridge door stay shut?
STEP 1
Make sure it’s fully latched, not in vent mode
Push until you hear or feel the click. If your fridge has a storage or vent setting, make sure it’s switched back. Dometic’s NRX manual says the storage position must not be used while driving, and the CRX lock should only be turned with the door open or it can be damaged.
STEP 2
Check the hinges
Open the door and lift the free edge. Up-and-down play means loose hinge screws or a worn hinge or pin. Owners report Norcold doors coming loose and even falling off after rough roads when hinge screws back out. Tighten them and replace worn hinges.
STEP 3
Check the latch and catch
Look for a cracked latch, a broken spring or a catch that’s been pushed out of position. On N15DC/N20DC models the latch is worked by a cable inside the door, and owners report a snapped cable can lock the door shut or stop it latching.
STEP 4
Test the door seal and level
Close the door on a dollar bill on all four sides. Norcold says you should feel slight drag. Check the seal every 3–6 months. A fridge that’s badly out of level can also make doors swing or fail to seal.
Door still opens on the road?
Replace the worn part
Latches, catches and hinges are inexpensive. Match the part number to your model.
Add backup for travel
Owners commonly add a strap or a childproof latch for rough roads. These aren’t factory parts, so don’t drill through the door skin.
Model notes
| Model | How the latch works | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Norcold N7 / N8 Polar | Latch clicks shut when you push the door closed | Owners report loose or broken hinges. Check hinge screws often. |
| Norcold N15DC / N20DC | Handle pulls a cable inside the door to release the latch | A broken cable means taking the door apart. Parts are limited. |
| Dometic NRX (12V) | Latch has positions A and B | Dometic’s manual says to move the latch from position A (factory) to B. An adjustable latch is available. |
| Dometic CRX (12V) | Door lock with transport and vent positions | Only turn the lock with the door open. |
| Dometic RM1350 | Manual door lock; some versions have an automatic travel latch | The automatic latch needs a signal wire from the engine’s alternator (D+). |

FAQ
Why does my RV fridge door open while driving?
Usually a worn or broken latch, loose hinge screws that let the door sag below the catch, or the door being left in its vent or storage position. A poor seal or an out-of-level fridge can also play a part.
How do I keep my RV refrigerator door closed while traveling?
Make sure it’s fully latched (you should hear a click), not in the vent position, and that the hinges are tight. Many owners add a strap or childproof latch as backup.
My Norcold door fell off. What happened?
Owners report hinge screws loosening on rough roads until the door drops. Tighten all hinge screws and replace damaged hinges. Check them regularly.
How do I test my fridge door seal?
Close the door on a dollar bill at several points on all four sides. You should feel slight drag each time. If it slides out easily, the seal or door alignment needs attention.
