Dometic 12V RV Fridge Troubleshooting: DMC4101/DMC4081, NRX and CRX
Flash codes for the NRX and CRX, the low-voltage cutoffs, and fixes for a Dometic compressor fridge that won’t run or won’t cool.
Start here
- NRX and CRX flash a light to show faults (code table below). The DMC4101/4081 has no published codes.
- All three shut off at about 10.4 V and need about 11.7 V to start again (the 2020 DMC manual says 10.5 V).
- Measure voltage at the fridge while it tries to start. Thin or long wire is the most common reason a fridge cuts out while the battery looks fine.
- Dometic US support: 1-800-544-4881.
Covers these models
Dometic 12V compressor refrigerators. NRX and CRX models numbered 10xx also run on 100–240V AC (NRX S models through Dometic’s DPS-R 135 adapter).
NRX and CRX flash codes
The fault light (orange on NRX, red on CRX) flashes 0.25 seconds per flash, and the pattern repeats every 4 seconds.
| Flashes | Fault | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Voltage out of range | Battery charge, voltage at the fridge, wire size, loose or corroded connections, fuse |
| 2 | Fan over-current (over 1 A) | Blocked or stuck condenser fan; CRX50/65/80 also show this after too many start attempts |
| 3 | Compressor won’t start | Low voltage at start-up first; then rotor jammed or pressure too high (let it sit, then retry) |
| 4 | Compressor speed too low | Overloaded: hot location, poor ventilation, dirty condenser, warm food load |
| 5 | Electronics overheating | Ventilation and heat around the fridge; heavy load or high setting |
| Constant | Temperature sensor fault | Sensor defective: contact Dometic service |

Step-by-step: won’t run or keeps cutting out
STEP 1
Is it switched on?
DMC4101/4081: hold the mode button 3 seconds; the mode light comes on. NRX: hold ON/OFF 2 seconds. CRX: press the on/off button. After a power interruption, give a DMC 3–5 minutes before it restarts.
STEP 2
Check the fuse and breaker
NRX and CRX use a 15 A fuse on 12V. The DMC manual just says to check the fuse or breaker feeding it. Check any main switch or battery disconnect too.
STEP 3
Measure voltage at the fridge
Measure while the compressor tries to start. Below about 10.4 V the fridge shuts off, and it won’t restart until about 11.7 V. Compare with the battery: a big difference means voltage drop in the wiring. NRX and CRX battery protection is fixed (there’s no LOW/MED/HIGH setting like Dometic’s portable CFX coolers).
Good voltage at the fridge, still won’t run?
Fix the wiring or battery
Charge or replace the battery, clean and tighten connections, and upsize the wire. DMC wire table: 13 AWG to 8 ft, 12 AWG to 13 ft, 10 AWG to 20 ft, 8 AWG to 33 ft, 6 AWG to 50 ft (one-way length). 14 AWG isn’t recommended.
Read the code, then call service
Note the flash code (NRX/CRX). CRX’s manual says a compressor that won’t start with good voltage can be an open circuit at the compressor or a failed control module. Call Dometic or ask a tech.
Not cooling well
- Ventilation: blocked vent grilles and too little clearance are the top causes. NRX wants about 2 in. of clearance on several sides.
- Condenser and fan: clean a dusty condenser; a fan that’s noisy or not spinning needs replacing.
- Mode limits: DMC ECO mode only goes to level 1 and Silent to level 3. NRX QUIET mode limits cooling and switches back after 8 hours.
- Frost and door seal: iced walls mean a door seal problem or overdue defrost. Defrost the NRX when frost on the back wall reaches about 1/8 in. The DMC defrosts automatically.
- Too cold outside: NRX and CRX are rated for 61–109°F ambient. Below 50°F for long periods, NRX freezer control isn’t guaranteed. CRX110/140 AC/DC models have a Winter mode.
- Just started: give it 4–5 hours (NRX) before judging, or 24 hours before loading (DMC).
Doors and travel
- NRX door opens while driving: move the latch to position B. Position A (factory) can let the door open in motion.
- CRX: turn the door wheel clockwise to Lock, counterclockwise to Vent for storage. Only adjust it with the door open, or you can damage it.
- DMC4101/4081: swing out the lock’s airing feature to leave the doors slightly open for storage. Level the fridge if a door won’t close or seal.

FAQ
What do the flashing lights on a Dometic NRX or CRX fridge mean?
1 flash: voltage out of range. 2: fan over-current. 3: compressor won’t start. 4: compressor speed too low. 5: electronics overheating. Constant: temperature sensor fault.
Does the Dometic DMC4101 have error codes?
Dometic doesn’t publish any in the DMC4101/DMC4081 manuals. Work through power, ventilation and settings, then call Dometic.
What voltage does a Dometic 12V fridge shut off at?
About 10.4 V, restarting at about 11.7 V (NRX, CRX and the current DMC manual). The 2020 DMC manual says 10.5 V.
Can I change the battery protection level on an NRX or CRX?
No. It’s fixed. The LOW/MED/HIGH setting is on Dometic’s CF/CFX portable coolers.
Still stuck? Ask a tech with your model, serial number and what you’ve found. We’ll confirm the part before you order.
