Norcold N8DC and N10DC Troubleshooting Guide: Flash Codes, E1–E4 and Fixes

Norcold N8DC and N10DC Troubleshooting Guide: Flash Codes, E1–E4 and Fixes

These 12V compressor fridges report problems in two places: E-codes on the front touch panel, and flash codes from the compressor power module at the back. Find your code below, see what it looks like, and follow its step-by-step flowchart.

Front panel: E1 to E4. The code shows in the MODE window, where the temperature setting (0 to 5) normally appears. The blue light under the power button means the fridge is on.

Power module: 1 to 6 flashes. Hook a test LED to the compressor power module and count the 1/4-second flashes before the pause. Shown here: 3 flashes.

Norcold’s 12V DC compressor refrigerators (8.2 and 9.7 cu ft). These run on 12 volts only: no propane, no 120V heater.

Jump to a code

Check these first

  • The fridge is turned on, and in DAY mode (don’t test in NIGHT mode).
  • The door closes and seals all the way around.
  • The vents aren’t blocked and the condenser coil at the back is clean.
  • The RV’s fuse or breaker and the fridge’s 15A in-line fuse are good.
  • It’s under 110°F inside the RV, the freezer is defrosted, and food isn’t blocking airflow.

POWER MODULE FLASH CODES

Read with a test LED at the back of the fridge

How to read the flash code

You’ll need a 10 mA LED with leads, two 1/4″ push-on female connectors, and a 1/4″ piggyback adapter (one female, two male).

  1. Pull the fridge out of its enclosure, but keep 12V connected.
  2. Take the 12V input wire off the module’s + terminal and fit a 1/4″ piggyback adapter on that terminal.
  3. Connect a 10 mA LED: red lead to the adapter, black lead to terminal D.
  4. Plug the 12V wire onto the adapter’s other tab. Count the flashes (each is 1/4 second), then the pause, then it repeats.

Write down every code, then remove the LED and adapter. Don’t leave them in for normal use.

Running voltage (panel) Cuts out below 10.4 V, restarts at 11.9 V
Power module window 9.8 to 17.0 V DC
In-line fuse 15A on the positive wire
Converter ripple 250 mV or less
Thermistors 1.7 to 2.5 kΩ at 75°F
Compressor windings Under 1 Ω, all three about equal
T to C signal Compressor off at 4.7 V or more, on at 2.7 to 3.3 V
Hot RV limit 110°F ambient
Off-level limit 10° side to side or front to back
Default settings Freezer 4, fresh food 3 (1 warmest, 5 coldest)

Wire size

Wire size Max cable length Strands
10 AWG 15 ft 19+
8 AWG 20 ft 19+
8 AWG 25 ft 133+
6 AWG 40 ft 133+
6 AWG 45 ft 266+

Positive and negative wires must be the same length, run straight from the battery (fuse included), with no more than 0.3 volts of drop.

Common questions

Why does my N8DC show E3 when my battery reads 12.6 volts?

Resting voltage can look fine while the compressor pull drops it below 10.4 volts at the fridge. Undersized or long wiring is the usual cause. Check the wire-size table above and measure at the fridge while it runs.

Do I have to wait before turning it back on?

Yes. After it’s turned off, wait about 5 minutes so the pressures equalize. Restarting too soon can cause a 3-flash start error.

Is this fridge frost-free?

No. The N8DC and N10DC need defrosting now and then. Cold settings, high humidity and frequent door openings make frost build faster.

Where’s the compressor power module?

On the compressor at the bottom of the back of the fridge, reached through the outside access. Its terminals are marked +, −, F, D, C, P and T.
