Norcold N8DC and N10DC 4 Flashes: Compressor Speed Too Low
The compressor can’t hold its minimum speed of 1,850 rpm. It’s working too hard: blocked vents, a dirty condenser, a dead fan, a hot RV, or low voltage.
Before you start
- Pull it out first. Most tests need the fridge slid out of its enclosure with 12V still connected.
- Good voltage is 11.9 to 15.6 volts DC to start, and it must stay between 10.4 and 15.6 volts while running.
- Hot RV? The fridge is rated for up to 110°F inside the RV.
Fits these models
Norcold’s 12V DC compressor refrigerators (8.2 and 9.7 cu ft). These run on 12 volts only: no propane, no 120V heater.
How to read this code
4 flashes, then a pause. This code comes from the compressor power module, not the front panel. You read it with a test LED.
- Pull the fridge out of its enclosure, but keep 12V connected.
- Take the 12V input wire off the module’s + terminal and fit a 1/4″ piggyback adapter on that terminal.
- Connect a 10 mA LED: red lead to the adapter, black lead to terminal D.
- Plug the 12V wire onto the adapter’s other tab. Count the flashes (each is 1/4 second), then the pause, then it repeats.
Write down every code, then remove the LED and adapter. Don’t leave them in for normal use.
STEP 1
Check the basics
Make sure the upper and lower vents aren’t blocked, the fridge isn’t packed with hot food, and it’s under 110°F inside the RV.
STEP 2
Measure the voltage
Measure DC volts at the fridge’s input with the compressor running.
Is it 10.4 to 15.6 volts?
Correct the input voltage
Fix the battery, charger or wiring, then check again.
Victron Lithium SuperPack 12.8V 100Ah →LiFePO4 holds near 13 volts through most of its charge. Built-in BMS.
Victron SmartShunt Battery Monitor →Shows battery voltage on your phone, so you spot overcharging early.STEP 3
Check the fan and condenser
Look at the condenser fan at the back and the condenser coil behind it.
Is the fan running and the coil clean?
STEP 4
Replace the module
Replace the compressor power module and run the fridge.
Does the 4-flash code come back?
Repair complete
The fridge is running normally again.
The refrigerator needs replacing
The fault is in the sealed cooling system or compressor, which isn’t serviced in the field. Ask a tech about your replacement options.
Still stuck? ask a tech with your model, serial number and the code or readings you got. We’ll confirm the part before you order.
Covers the Norcold N8DC, N8DCX, N10DC and N10DCX. Based on the Norcold N8DCX/N10DCX service manual (640083D), Test D: minimum compressor motor speed.
