Norcold N8DC and N10DC 6 Flashes or Shuts Off With Good Voltage

6 FLASHES

Norcold N8DC and N10DC 6 Flashes or Shuts Off With Good Voltage

The front panel stays on, but the compressor, fan and light all shut off, even though your meter says the voltage is fine. Six flashes means the module has failed. With no flash code, it’s usually wiring that can’t carry the load: voltage looks fine at rest but drops when the compressor starts.

Before you start

  • Pull it out first. Most tests need the fridge slid out of its enclosure with 12V still connected.
  • Good voltage is 11.9 to 15.6 volts DC to start, and it must stay between 10.4 and 15.6 volts while running.
  • Do the LED self-test first. The flash code tells you which branch to follow.

Fits these models

Norcold’s 12V DC compressor refrigerators (8.2 and 9.7 cu ft). These run on 12 volts only: no propane, no 120V heater.

How to read this code

6 flashes, then a pause. This code comes from the compressor power module, not the front panel. You read it with a test LED.

  1. Pull the fridge out of its enclosure, but keep 12V connected.
  2. Take the 12V input wire off the module’s + terminal and fit a 1/4″ piggyback adapter on that terminal.
  3. Connect a 10 mA LED: red lead to the adapter, black lead to terminal D.
  4. Plug the 12V wire onto the adapter’s other tab. Count the flashes (each is 1/4 second), then the pause, then it repeats.

Write down every code, then remove the LED and adapter. Don’t leave them in for normal use.

STEP 1

Read the flash code

Do the LED self-test above.

?

Does it flash 6 times?

NO

YES

Replace the compressor power module

Six flashes is a hardware failure inside the module. It’s the small module bolted to the compressor at the back of the fridge. See the N8DC or N10DC parts or ask a tech.

STEP 2

Check the wire size

Compare the wire feeding the fridge to Norcold’s table:

Wire size Max cable length Strands
10 AWG 15 ft 19+
8 AWG 20 ft 19+
8 AWG 25 ft 133+
6 AWG 40 ft 133+
6 AWG 45 ft 266+

Positive and negative wires must be the same length, run straight from the battery (fuse included), with no more than 0.3 volts of drop.

▼
?

Is the wiring big enough for its length?

NO
▼

Upgrade the wiring

Undersized wire drops voltage the moment the compressor starts. Rewire to the table, then test again.

YES

STEP 3

Inspect the wiring

Using the wiring diagram, check every connection at the compressor power module and the user interface board. Look for broken or frayed wires, bad crimps, and pinching. Pull the wires out of the raceway on the back of the fridge and inspect them too.

▼
?

Did you find a wiring problem?

YES
▼

Repair it

Fix what you found, then test again. If it still shuts off, go to Step 4.

NO

STEP 4

Replace the user interface board

Replace the user interface control board at the top of the fridge.

▼
?

Is the problem fixed?

YES
▼

Repair complete

The fridge is running normally again.

NO

The refrigerator needs replacing

The fault is in the sealed cooling system or compressor, which isn’t serviced in the field. Ask a tech about your replacement options.
