Norcold N8DC and N10DC Won’t Run on 12V DC
NO 12V RUN
Norcold N8DC and N10DC Won’t Run on 12V DC
The fridge won’t run on the RV’s 12V system. Common causes: a blown fuse, undersized wire, a partly discharged battery (under 11.9 volts at the module), or voltage drop from a bad connection.
Before you start
- Good voltage is 11.9 to 15.6 volts DC to start, and it must stay between 10.4 and 15.6 volts while running.
- Two fuses. There may be more than one fuse or breaker in the circuit. Check both the RV’s and the fridge’s 15A in-line fuse.
Fits these models
Norcold’s 12V DC compressor refrigerators (8.2 and 9.7 cu ft). These run on 12 volts only: no propane, no 120V heater.
STEP 1
Check the fuses
Check the DC circuit fuses for continuity.
Is a fuse blown?
Replace the fuse
Then repeat this step.
STEP 2
Check the wire size
Compare the wire feeding the fridge to Norcold’s table:
| Wire size | Max cable length | Strands |
|---|---|---|
| 10 AWG | 15 ft | 19+ |
| 8 AWG | 20 ft | 19+ |
| 8 AWG | 25 ft | 133+ |
| 6 AWG | 40 ft | 133+ |
| 6 AWG | 45 ft | 266+ |
Positive and negative wires must be the same length, run straight from the battery (fuse included), with no more than 0.3 volts of drop.
Is the wiring big enough for its length?
Upgrade the wiring
Rewire to the table.
STEP 3
Measure the input voltage
Measure DC volts at the fridge’s input.
Is it 11.9 to 15.6 volts?
Correct the DC input voltage
If it still won’t run, go to Step 4.
Victron Lithium SuperPack 12.8V 100Ah →LiFePO4 holds near 13 volts through most of its charge. Built-in BMS.
Victron SmartShunt Battery Monitor →Shows battery voltage on your phone, so you spot overcharging early.
Progressive Dynamics PD9360V 60A →Converter/charger with lead-acid, AGM and lithium settings. Replaces the PD9160.STEP 4
Inspect the wiring
Using the wiring diagram, check every connection at the compressor power module and the user interface board. Look for broken or frayed wires, bad crimps, and pinching. Pull the wires out of the raceway on the back of the fridge and inspect them too.
Did you find a wiring problem?
Repair it
If it still won’t run, go to Step 5.
STEP 5
Check the touch panel
Press the power button.
Does the user interface power on?
Replace the user interface control board
It’s the control board behind the touch panel at the top of the fridge. See the N8DC or N10DC parts or ask a tech.
STEP 6
Check the compressor
Listen for the compressor.
Does the compressor come on?
Repair complete
The fridge is running normally again.
Replace the compressor power module
If it still won’t run afterward, the fridge needs replacing. It’s the small module bolted to the compressor at the back of the fridge. See the N8DC or N10DC parts or ask a tech.
Still stuck? ask a tech with your model, serial number and the code or readings you got. We’ll confirm the part before you order.
Covers the Norcold N8DC, N8DCX, N10DC and N10DCX. Based on the Norcold N8DCX/N10DCX service manual (640083D), Test J: will not run on DC power.
