Norcold N8DC and N10DC Error Code E3: Voltage Out of Range
The control board sees 12V outside its cut-out range. It shuts off below 10.4 volts and won’t restart until it sees 11.9 volts. Weak batteries and undersized wiring are the usual causes.
Before you start
- Pull it out first. Most tests need the fridge slid out of its enclosure with 12V still connected.
- Good voltage is 11.9 to 15.6 volts DC to start, and it must stay between 10.4 and 15.6 volts while running.
Fits these models
Norcold’s 12V DC compressor refrigerators (8.2 and 9.7 cu ft). These run on 12 volts only: no propane, no 120V heater.
What you’ll see
E3 in the MODE window on the front touch panel. The voltage reaching the control board is outside its cut-out setting.
STEP 1
Measure the input voltage
Measure DC volts at the fridge’s input.
Is it 11.9 to 15.6 volts?
Correct the input voltage
Charge or replace the battery, or fix the charger, converter or wiring. Converters must have less than 250 mV of ripple to power this fridge.
Victron Lithium SuperPack 12.8V 100Ah →LiFePO4 holds near 13 volts through most of its charge. Built-in BMS.
Victron SmartShunt Battery Monitor →Shows battery voltage on your phone, so you spot overcharging early.
Progressive Dynamics PD9360V 60A →Converter/charger with lead-acid, AGM and lithium settings. Replaces the PD9160.STEP 2
Check the wire size
Compare the wire feeding the fridge to Norcold’s table:
| Wire size | Max cable length | Strands |
|---|---|---|
| 10 AWG | 15 ft | 19+ |
| 8 AWG | 20 ft | 19+ |
| 8 AWG | 25 ft | 133+ |
| 6 AWG | 40 ft | 133+ |
| 6 AWG | 45 ft | 266+ |
Positive and negative wires must be the same length, run straight from the battery (fuse included), with no more than 0.3 volts of drop.
Is the wiring big enough for its length?
Upgrade the wiring
Rewire to the table so voltage doesn’t drop under load.
Replace the user interface control board
Voltage and wiring are good. It’s the control board behind the touch panel at the top of the fridge. See the N8DC or N10DC parts or ask a tech.
Still stuck? ask a tech with your model, serial number and the code or readings you got. We’ll confirm the part before you order.
Covers the Norcold N8DC, N8DCX, N10DC and N10DCX. Based on the Norcold N8DCX/N10DCX service manual (640083D), fault code E3.
