Norcold N8DC and N10DC 1 Flash: Battery Protection Cut-Out

1 FLASH

Norcold N8DC and N10DC 1 Flash: Battery Protection Cut-Out

The compressor power module saw voltage outside its 9.8 to 17.0 volt window and shut the compressor off to protect itself. Almost always it’s the 12V supply: a weak battery, a blown fuse, undersized wire or a bad connection.

Before you start

  • Pull it out first. Most tests need the fridge slid out of its enclosure with 12V still connected.
  • Good voltage is 11.9 to 15.6 volts DC to start, and it must stay between 10.4 and 15.6 volts while running.
  • Where things are. The compressor, its power module (terminals +, −, F, D, C, P, T), the 15A in-line fuse and the condenser fan are at the back. The touch panel and user interface board are at the top front.
  • You’ll need a multimeter set to DC volts and continuity.

Norcold’s 12V DC compressor refrigerators (8.2 and 9.7 cu ft). These run on 12 volts only: no propane, no 120V heater.

How to read this code

1 flash, then a pause. This code comes from the compressor power module, not the front panel. You read it with a test LED (Norcold 641315).

  1. Pull the fridge out of its enclosure, but keep 12V connected.
  2. Take the 12V input wire off the module’s + terminal and fit a 1/4″ piggyback adapter on that terminal.
  3. Connect a 10 mA LED: red lead to the adapter, black lead to terminal D.
  4. Plug the 12V wire onto the adapter’s other tab. Count the flashes (each is 1/4 second), then the pause, then it repeats.

Write down every code, then remove the LED and adapter. Don’t leave them in for normal use.

STEP 1

Check the 15A fuse

Find the in-line fuse on the positive wire feeding the module’s + terminal. Check it for continuity with your meter.

▼
?

Is the fuse good?

NO
▼

Replace the fuse

Use the same 15A rating, then go to Step 2.

YES
▼
Go to Step 2 ▼

STEP 2

Measure voltage with the fridge off

Turn the fridge OFF. Measure DC volts at the fridge’s DC input connector.

▼
?

Is it 11.9 to 15.6 volts?

NO
▼

Fix the 12V supply

The problem is before the fridge: battery, charger, converter or wiring. Repair it, then come back to Step 2.

YES
▼
Go to Step 3 ▼

STEP 3

Measure voltage while it runs

Set both freezer and fresh food to 5 so the compressor runs. Measure at the DC input connector again.

▼
?

Does it stay between 10.4 and 15.6 volts?

NO
▼

Fix the DC supply under load

Voltage is sagging once the compressor pulls current. Check battery health, wire size and every connection. Then come back to Step 3.

Go to Step 4 ▼

STEP 4

Measure at the compressor terminals

With the compressor still running, measure between the module’s + and − terminals.

▼
?

Is it 10.4 to 15.6 volts?

NO
▼

Repair the fridge’s power cable

Check the input terminal crimps, look for frayed or damaged wires, and check the 90° push-on connectors on the compressor.

YES
▼
Go to Step 5 ▼

STEP 5

Replace the module and retest

Voltage is good all the way to the compressor, so the module is misreading it. Replace the compressor power module, then redo the LED self-test. ▼
?

Is the 1-flash code gone?

YES
▼

Repair complete

The fridge is running normally again.

NO
▼

The refrigerator needs replacing

The fault is in the sealed cooling system or compressor, which isn’t serviced in the field. Ask a tech about your replacement options.
