2 FLASHES

Norcold N8DC and N10DC 2 Flashes: Fan Over-Current Cut-Out

The module sensed more than 1 amp on its fan terminal (F−). On these fridges the module doesn’t run the fan at all, so nothing should be connected there. This code means a wiring mistake or a bad module.

Before you start

  • Pull it out first. Most tests need the fridge slid out of its enclosure with 12V still connected.
  • Where things are. The compressor, its power module (terminals +, −, F, D, C, P, T), the 15A in-line fuse and the condenser fan are at the back. The touch panel and user interface board are at the top front.
  • Good to know. Terminal F on the compressor power module should have no wire on it.

Fits these models

Norcold’s 12V DC compressor refrigerators (8.2 and 9.7 cu ft). These run on 12 volts only: no propane, no 120V heater.

How to read this code

2 flashes, then a pause. This code comes from the compressor power module, not the front panel. You read it with a test LED (Norcold 641315).

  1. Pull the fridge out of its enclosure, but keep 12V connected.
  2. Take the 12V input wire off the module’s + terminal and fit a 1/4″ piggyback adapter on that terminal.
  3. Connect a 10 mA LED: red lead to the adapter, black lead to terminal D.
  4. Plug the 12V wire onto the adapter’s other tab. Count the flashes (each is 1/4 second), then the pause, then it repeats.

Write down every code, then remove the LED and adapter. Don’t leave them in for normal use.

STEP 1

Check the module wiring

Compare every wire on the compressor power module to the wiring diagram. Pay special attention to terminal F: it should be empty.

?

Is every connection correct?

NO

Correct the wiring

Move or remove wires to match the diagram, then redo the LED self-test. If 2 flashes are gone, you’re done. If not, replace the module.

YES

Replace the compressor power module

The wiring is right, so the module itself is faulty. It’s the small module bolted to the compressor at the back of the fridge. Ask a tech if you’re not sure.

Still stuck? ask a tech with your model, serial number and the code or readings you got. We’ll confirm the part before you order.
Covers the Norcold N8DC, N8DCX, N10DC and N10DCX. Based on the Norcold N8DCX/N10DCX service manual (640083D), Test B: fan over current cut-out.
