TOO COLD

Norcold N8DC and N10DC Gets Too Cold or Freezing Food

Food is freezing in the fresh food section, or the compressor never seems to stop. Check the sensors, the diverter valve (which sends cooling to the freezer or the fresh food side), then the control signal between the board and the module.

Before you start

  • Pull it out first. Most tests need the fridge slid out of its enclosure with 12V still connected.
  • You’ll need a multimeter set to ohms and DC volts.
  • E1 or E2 showing? Follow the E1 or E2 flowchart first.

Fits these models

N8DCN8DCXN10DCN10DCX

Norcold’s 12V DC compressor refrigerators (8.2 and 9.7 cu ft). These run on 12 volts only: no propane, no 120V heater.

STEP 1

Check the sensor and valve plugs

Using the wiring diagram, check the freezer and fresh food thermistors and the diverter valve at the user interface board. The thermistor plugs are color coded white and red and must go into the header of the same color.

▼
?

Are they connected correctly?

NO
▼

Connect them per the diagram

If it’s still too cold, go to Step 2.

YES
▼
Go to Step 2 ▼

STEP 2

Test the thermistor

Remove the thermistor from the compartment that’s too cold. Unplug the thermistor and measure across its connector with a meter set to ohms, at about 75°F. A good one reads 1.7 to 2.5 kΩ (1,700 to 2,500 ohms).

▼
?

Does it test good?

NO
▼

Replace the thermistor

See the N8DC or N10DC parts. If it’s still too cold, go to Step 3.

YES
▼
Go to Step 3 ▼

STEP 3

Inspect the diverter valve

Look at the diverter valve, its wiring and tubing. Check for damaged or frayed wires, pinched or bent tubing, and a damaged valve housing.

▼
?

Is the valve itself damaged?

YES
▼

The refrigerator needs replacing

A damaged diverter valve is part of the sealed system. The fault is in the sealed cooling system or compressor, which isn’t serviced in the field. Ask a tech about your replacement options.

NO
▼
Go to Step 4 ▼

STEP 4

Check the valve wiring

Look closely at just the diverter valve’s wiring.

▼
?

Is the wiring damaged?

YES
▼

Repair the valve wiring

If it’s still too cold, go to Step 5.

NO
▼
Go to Step 5 ▼

STEP 5

Disconnect terminal T

Disconnect the wire from terminal T on the compressor power module. That’s the on/off signal from the board.

▼
?

Did the compressor stop?

YES
▼

Repair the signal wiring

The wire between the user interface board and the module is shorted or damaged. Repair it. If it’s still too cold, go to Step 6.

NO
▼
Go to Step 6 ▼

STEP 6

Measure the control signal

Reconnect terminal T. Measure DC volts from T to C. The compressor should be off at 4.7 volts or more and on at 2.7 to 3.3 volts.

▼
?

Is it 4.7 volts or more with the compressor still running?

NO
▼

Replace the user interface control board

The board is calling for cooling when it shouldn’t. If it’s still too cold afterward, the fridge needs replacing. It’s the control board behind the touch panel at the top of the fridge. See the N8DC or N10DC parts or ask a tech.

YES
▼

Replace the compressor power module

The board is telling it to stop, but the module keeps running. It’s the small module bolted to the compressor at the back of the fridge. See the N8DC or N10DC parts or ask a tech.
