Norcold N8DC and N10DC Not Cooling, Compressor Won’t Turn On
The fridge is warm and you can’t hear the compressor run. Work from the simple stuff (power, wiring, fuse) to the sensors, then the module and compressor.
Before you start
- Pull it out first. Most tests need the fridge slid out of its enclosure with 12V still connected.
- Good voltage is 11.9 to 15.6 volts DC to start, and it must stay between 10.4 and 15.6 volts while running.
- Where things are. The compressor, its power module (terminals +, −, F, D, C, P, T), the 15A in-line fuse and the condenser fan are at the back. The touch panel and user interface board are at the top front.
- Check E-codes and flashes first. If the panel shows an E-code or the module gives a flash code, follow that code’s flowchart instead.
Fits these models
Norcold’s 12V DC compressor refrigerators (8.2 and 9.7 cu ft). These run on 12 volts only: no propane, no 120V heater.
The blue light under the power button should glow when the fridge is on. If it stays dark, start at Step 1 and pay attention to Step 3.
STEP 1
Check the wiring
Look over every wire and connector for damage, fraying or pinching, and make sure every plug is in the right place.
Is all the wiring good?
Reconnect per the wiring diagram
Then go to Step 2.
STEP 2
Turn it on
Turn the fridge ON. The blue light under the power button should come on.
Does the blue light come on?
STEP 3
Is it getting 12V?
Check that the fridge is connected to 12V DC power.
Is it connected?
Connect it to 12V
Then go to Step 4.
Check the 15A fuse
Replace it if it’s blown, then go to Step 4.
STEP 4
Measure the input voltage
With the fridge OFF, measure DC volts at the input.
Is it 11.9 to 15.6 volts?
Correct the DC input voltage
Then repeat this step.
Victron Lithium SuperPack 12.8V 100Ah →LiFePO4 holds near 13 volts through most of its charge. Built-in BMS.
Victron SmartShunt Battery Monitor →Shows battery voltage on your phone, so you spot overcharging early.STEP 5
Test both thermistors
Remove the freezer and fresh food thermistors. Unplug the thermistor and measure across its connector with a meter set to ohms, at about 75°F. A good one reads 1.7 to 2.5 kΩ (1,700 to 2,500 ohms).
Do both test good?
STEP 6
Inspect the compressor harness
Turn the power OFF and disconnect 12V. Remove the compressor power module and its cover, and look at the compressor wire harness for faulty or burnt wiring.
Is the harness OK?
Replace the compressor power module
Then go back to Step 2. It’s the small module bolted to the compressor at the back of the fridge. See the N8DC or N10DC parts or ask a tech.
STEP 7
Measure the compressor windings
With the harness still unplugged, measure resistance between each pair of the 3 pins on the compressor.
Are all three under 1 ohm and about equal?
Replace the compressor power module
The compressor is good, so the module isn’t driving it. Then go back to Step 2. It’s the small module bolted to the compressor at the back of the fridge. See the N8DC or N10DC parts or ask a tech.
The refrigerator needs replacing
The compressor motor has failed. The fault is in the sealed cooling system or compressor, which isn’t serviced in the field. Ask a tech about your replacement options.
Still stuck? ask a tech with your model, serial number and the code or readings you got. We’ll confirm the part before you order.
