My Norcold Refrigerator Door Fell Off!!! (Norcold N7X/ N8X/ N10X)

Opened your Norcold and the bottom door came off in your hand? You're not alone. It was a known problem on the older N6 and N8 refrigerators, and it still happens on the newer Polar N7X, N8X and N10X.

Quick answer

The lower hinge pin sits in molded plastic that cracks over time. The hinge is part of the door, so the fix is a new lower door: Lower Door 638532 for the N7X, or Lower Door 638534 for the N8X and N10X. It installs in about 30 minutes, and your existing panel moves over.

Why Do Norcold Refrigerator Doors Fall Off?

It's almost always the lower door. Its bottom hinge pin rides in a molded plastic pocket that is part of the door itself. Weight, vibration and road shock slowly crack that plastic until the door drops off the pin.

  • Door weight. Raised wood panels are much heavier than the stock acrylic.
  • Loaded door bins. Milk, juice, soda and glass jars put leverage right on the hinge.
  • Travel. Potholes, railroad crossings and washboard roads flex the door every mile.

Models Affected

Generation Models
Older N6 / N8 series N611, N621, N641, N811, N821, N841, N1095
Polar series (current) N7X, N8X, N10X (and N7, N8, N10, NA7, NA8, NA10)

Signs Your Norcold Door Is About to Fail

Door sits crooked or lower on the hinge side
Rubs the frame when it opens or closes
Cracks or white stress marks near the lower hinge
Feels loose or wobbles when opened
Doesn't seal; frost or warm fridge
Drops slightly every time you open it

See any of these? Check the lower hinge now, before the door falls and damages the frame or trim.

The Fix: Replace the Lower Door

There's no reliable permanent repair for a cracked hinge pocket. Glue, epoxy and plastic welding may hold for a while, but they fail under the same load that cracked it. Because the hinge pocket and the door seals are molded into the door, a new door restores both.

What's included

  • New lower door with a new hinge pocket
  • Door seals (molded into the door)
  • 1-year manufacturer's warranty

What's not included

  • Decorative front panel. Unclip the side trim and slide your old panel over, or upgrade to a lighter black acrylic panel.

Install time: about 30 minutes.

Swap Heavy Wood Panels for Lighter Acrylic

If your doors have raised wood panels, this is the best time to switch. The black acrylic panels slide in behind the same side trim and take a lot of weight off the hinge.

How to Keep It From Happening Again

1

Lighten the panels

Raised wood panels add a lot of weight. Smooth black acrylic or a thin flat panel is much easier on the hinge.

2

Keep heavy items out of the door

Store gallons, 2-liters, cans and glass jars on the shelves, especially when you travel.

3

Secure the doors for travel

A travel latch or strap keeps the doors from bouncing and flexing on rough roads.

4

Check the lower hinge every season

Look for cracks or white stress marks before each trip season. Replacing a door early beats picking it up off the floor.

Get the right door the first time

Most N7X, N8X and N10X lower doors ship same day when ordered before 1pm EST.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I repair a cracked Norcold door hinge?

Only temporarily. Glue, epoxy and plastic welding don't hold up to the door's weight and road vibration. Replacing the lower door is the permanent fix.

Is this a known Norcold problem?

Yes. It was common on the N6 and N8 series and still happens on the Polar N7X, N8X and N10X.

Why does my refrigerator door keep falling off?

Usually a cracked lower hinge pocket, made worse by heavy wood panels, loaded door bins and travel vibration.

Do I need a new upper door too?

Usually not. The lower door carries the most weight. If the upper door also shows cracks, the Upper Door 638530 fits all Polar N7, N8 and N10 models.

Does the new door come with a panel?

No. Move your existing panel over by unclipping the side trim, or add a black acrylic panel.

Will a new door fix the problem for good?

A new door restores the hinge and seals. Keeping panels light and heavy items out of the door bins helps it last.
