RV Fridge Smells Like Ammonia or Has Yellow Residue? What It Means and What to Do

An ammonia smell or yellow powder behind an absorption fridge usually means the sealed cooling unit is leaking. Here’s what to do right now, and your options after.

Strong ammonia smell right now?

Norcold’s installation manual says: open windows, don’t light any appliance, don’t touch electrical switches, put out any open flame, shut off the propane, get out and call emergency services. Dometic adds: turn the fridge off at its panel, don’t open the fridge doors, shut the manual gas valve and unplug the 120V cord.

The short version

  • Yellow residue on the back of the fridge, an ammonia smell and sometimes a gurgling noise are Norcold’s listed signs of a cooling unit leak.
  • Norcold: “Do not operate the refrigerator if the cooling unit is leaking or a leak is suspected.” Dometic says to turn it off immediately.
  • A leaking cooling unit can’t be repaired or recharged. Both brands say to replace it.
  • Your options: a replacement cooling unit or a new refrigerator. Check for a recall first.

Propane/electric absorption refrigerators. 12V compressor fridges use a different refrigerant and don’t have this kind of cooling unit.

What’s inside the cooling unit

The cooling unit is a sealed, pressurized system containing ammonia, water, hydrogen and a sodium chromate rust inhibitor. Norcold warns that ammonia can cause severe skin and eye burns, hydrogen is highly flammable, and certain chromium compounds such as sodium chromate can cause cancer. That’s why a leak is a stop-using-it problem, not a wait-and-see one. Neither brand says why the residue is yellow, but sodium chromate is yellow, so it’s the likely reason.

Step-by-step: confirm it and stay safe

STEP 1

Shut it down and air out the RV

Turn the fridge off at the control panel, shut the propane valve and unplug the 120V cord. Open windows and doors. Keep the fridge doors closed.

STEP 2

Look at the back of the fridge

From outside, remove the lower vent and look at the cooling unit with a flashlight, especially around the boiler area at the lower right and the tubing. Look for yellow powder or crusty yellow-green stains. Dometic’s older service manual notes a small yellow deposit right at the fill valve can be from the factory, so it isn’t always a leak on its own.

Yellow residue, ammonia smell, or the fridge stopped cooling?

YES
▼

Treat it as a leak

Don’t run the fridge on gas or electric. Don’t reset a lockout code to “get it going.” The cooling unit needs replacing, or the fridge does.

NOT SURE
▼

Have it checked before you use it

A faint smell with no residue still deserves an inspection. If the fridge shows NO CO, n or 5 flashes, check for residue before you reset anything.

STEP 3

Check for a recall

Some Norcold 1200-series and Dometic two-door units were recalled for cooling unit or boiler problems. See Is my RV refrigerator under recall?.

STEP 4

Choose a fix

Replace the cooling unit (an option if the cabinet and controls are good) or replace the refrigerator. A 12V compressor fridge avoids absorption cooling units entirely, but needs enough battery and charging.

Can a leaking cooling unit be fixed?

No. Norcold: “Do not try to repair or recharge the cooling unit.” Dometic: “There are no repairs recommended on the cooling unit. If it is defective, replace with a new cooling unit.” Some companies sell rebuilt or aftermarket units (the Nordic units below are aftermarket replacements, not Norcold or Dometic parts).

What about “burping” the fridge?

Turning an absorption fridge upside down to “burp” it is a common internet fix. The only manufacturer statement we found is in a 1989 Dometic service manual: shaking, tipping or “burping” the refrigerator “will not loosen or dislodge the blockage,” and the recommended fix is replacing the cooling unit. And a unit with yellow residue has already lost its charge, so there’s nothing to burp back into place.

FAQ

Is an ammonia smell from my RV fridge dangerous?

It can be. Ammonia irritates and can burn eyes, skin and lungs, and the unit also contains flammable hydrogen. Turn the fridge off, shut the gas, unplug it and air out the RV.

What is the yellow powder behind my RV refrigerator?

Usually residue from the cooling unit’s solution after a leak. Norcold lists yellow residue on the rear as a sign of a leak.

Can I keep using the fridge until I replace it?

No. Norcold says not to operate it if a leak is suspected, and Dometic says to turn it off immediately.

Can a cooling unit be recharged?

No. Both Norcold and Dometic say not to repair or recharge it. Replace the cooling unit or the refrigerator.
