FLASH PATTERN 8

Norcold N7X / N8X DC Voltage Low

The red light flashes eight times, goes off for 5 seconds and repeats. The 12V DC supply to the fridge is too low. Norcold’s fix is to bring it back up to 12.0 volts DC. This is usually a battery or wiring problem, not a fridge part.

Before you start

  • Note the code. Count the flashes twice to be sure it’s 8 and not 9 or 10. Those point to different faults.
  • Why it matters. The fridge’s controls run on 12V, even in AC or LP mode. Low 12V can stop the fridge in any mode.
  • You’ll need a multimeter set to DC volts.

STEP 1

Check the battery

Set a multimeter to DC volts and measure across the RV battery terminals.

▼
?

Is the battery at 12.0 volts or more?

NO
▼

Charge the battery

Plug into shore power or run the generator so the converter can charge it. If the battery won’t hold a charge, or the voltage doesn’t rise on shore power, check the converter and the battery itself.

Battery won’t hold a charge? Upgrade it:

Victron Lithium SuperPack 12.8V 100Ah Victron Lithium SuperPack 12.8V 100Ah →LiFePO4 holds near 13 volts through most of its charge. Built-in BMS.

STEP 2

Check the voltage at the fridge

With the fridge ON, measure across the 12V DC input wires where they connect at the fridge’s power board, behind the lower outside vent.

▼
?

Does the fridge get 12.0 volts or more?

NO
▼

Find the voltage drop

The battery is fine but the voltage is lost on the way. Check the fridge’s 12V fuse or breaker, clean and tighten every connection (including the ground) and look for undersized, corroded or damaged wire.

YES

Reset and recheck

Turn the fridge OFF, then back ON. The code should clear once the fridge sees a steady 12 volts. If 8 flashes keep coming back with good voltage, ask a tech.

Keep 8 flashes from coming back

Most low-voltage codes start with a tired battery, a weak campground pedestal or a converter that isn’t charging. These help you catch it early:

A surge protector or EMS guards the converter that charges your battery. It won’t raise a low 12V reading by itself. Switching to lithium? Make sure your converter or charger has a lithium charging profile.

Seeing a different code? 1 flash: AC heater fault · 2 flashes: internal control fault · 3 flashes: limit circuit fault · 4 flashes: AC heater relay fault · 5 flashes: flame sensed fault. Still stuck? Ask a tech with your model, serial number and voltage readings. We’ll confirm the part before you order.
