BLANK

Norcold 2118 Blank Display (Won’t Turn On)

Nothing shows on the display when you press the power button. The 2118’s controls run on 12V DC, so the problem is almost always the 12V supply, the 5A fuse, the power button, or one of the two boards.

Before you start

  • Good voltage is 10.5 to 15.4 volts DC for the controls and 108 to 132 volts AC for the heaters.
  • Where things are. The power board, fuses, burner, gas valve and the Temperature Monitor Control (TMC) are behind the lower outside vent. The display and buttons are at the top front of the fridge.
  • You’ll need a multimeter set to DC volts, and a helper for Step 4.

The Norcold 2118 four-door, 2-way (120V AC and propane) refrigerator, including the IM (ice maker) and IMD (ice maker and dispenser) versions.

What you’ll see

The display stays dark, even after you press the power button. No icons, no temperature setting.

STEP 1

Measure 12V at the power board

Measure DC volts across the power board’s 12VDC and GND terminals.

▼
?

Is it 10.5 to 15.4 volts?

NO
▼

Fix the 12V supply

The problem is before the fridge: battery, converter, the RV’s in-line fuse or wiring. Norcold calls for at least 18 AWG wire and an in-line fuse of no more than 6A near the battery.

STEP 2

Check fuse F1

Check the 5A tan blade fuse (F1) on the power board.

▼
?

Is it good?

NO
▼

Replace the fuse

Use an automotive blade fuse, type APR-5A (tan). If it blows again, look for a short.

STEP 3

Check the continuous 12V

With the meter’s black lead on power board terminal P1-1 (ground), measure at P1-6. This feeds the display through the red-blue wire.

▼
?

Is there 12 volts at P1-6?

NO
▼

Replace the power board

12V reaches the board but doesn’t come out to the display. It’s behind the lower outside vent, under a cover on the back of the fridge. Ask a tech if you’re not sure it’s the board.

STEP 4

Test the power button

Keep the black lead on P1-1 and move the red lead to P2-3. Have someone press and hold the power button.

▼
?

Do you read 12 volts while the button is held (and lose it when released)?

NO
▼

Check the wiring, then the display board

Check the red-blue wire (power board P1-6 to display P1-1) and the blue wire (display P1-3 to power board P2-3). If both are good, the power button on the display board has failed; replace the display (optical) board. See Norcold 2117 / 2118 parts.

YES
▼
Go to Step 5 ▼

STEP 5

Check the switched 12V

The button press should latch relay K3 on the power board and send 12V back to the display on the red-yellow wire (power board P1-9 to display P1-2). Press the power button once and measure at P1-9.

▼
?

Is there 12 volts at P1-9?

NO
▼

Replace the power board

The latching relay isn’t sending power back to the display. It’s behind the lower outside vent, under a cover on the back of the fridge. Ask a tech if you’re not sure it’s the board.

Check the wire, then the display board

Check the red-yellow wire to the display’s P1-2. If it’s good, the display (optical) board has failed. See Norcold 2117 / 2118 parts.
